The Get up Kid —Matt Pryor Paying Respect with Solo Album & Tour
"a chance to connect with one of the genre’s most enduring voices in a stripped-down setting"
Saturday, January 24 —best known as frontman of The Get Up Kids, Matt Pryor is expanding his solo endeavors into Paper Tiger’s small room. For fans of emo and indie rock history, this show arrives as a chance to connect with one of the genre’s most enduring voices in a stripped-down setting.

Pryor’s solo work has often explored quieter territory than the anthems of his Kansas City band, but it remains tethered to the same lyrical urgency that defined records like Something to Write Home About. His recent projects, including the reflective Red Letter Days memoir and his collaborative work around The Get Up Kids’ reissues, show an artist less concerned with nostalgia than with re-examining the music’s cultural weight (The Ringer, Jan. 23, 2024).
In 2023, Pryor and his bandmates revisited On a Wire and shared unreleased material, while continuing to tour internationally. More recently, he released “The Salton Sea,” a track steeped in restrained melancholy, proving his voice still cuts with clarity decades into his career (AltPress, 2023).
San Antonio’s date will also highlight local and regional talent. Small Uncle and Chris Torres round out the bill, bringing a mix of DIY ethos and storytelling that aligns neatly with Pryor’s approach. The choice of Paper Tiger’s small room reinforces the night’s focus on direct connection rather than spectacle—leaning into the kind of performance that has long been the lifeblood of independent music.
From the inside looking out, it’s soul-filling to see a songwriter continue to move forward while honoring the foundation he helped build —that is the genuine step San Antonio will get the chance to witness first hand.
